Via The Movie Blog (link) and Moviehole (link) comes a rumor report that made me slap my forehead with a resounding DUH! After seeing the money aftermath of last week's Twilight theater takings, Hollywood minds started churning on how to cash in on the now profitable angsty teen vampire sub-genre that got a sudden popularity boost. Turning back to the creator who really cemented the high-school teen vampire in the American culture, many have realized that Joss Whedon may already have the next golden egg. Reports say that Joss Whedon, the writer of the original movie and cult TV hit, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, may already be circulating a feature-film script based on the popular television show. Knowing Hollywood's recent affinity for making movies from popular now-dead TV shows (e.g. Sex and the City, X-Files 2), I'm kinda surprised that this didn't happen already. While I never got into Buffy, I know that adding a feature film (and ignoring the 1992 comedy) to the Buffyverse would please many fans and may do well at the box office if Whedon can get enough of the general public interested. I'm sure many Buffy fans may hedge their hopes after Joss's first film, Serenity. It was very well received (81% 'fresh' on RottenTomatoes), but had lackluster ticket returns, not fully making back it's $39 million production budget until the DVD sales.
Taking to my friend Xander, a big Buffy fan, he made the point that he'd only get excited to see the movie if Joss Whedon wrote and directed it. Knowing the fate that befell the first Buffy movie, I'd agree. Overall, I'd like to see it made. I thoroughly enjoyed Serenity even though I wasn't a Firefly follower beforehand, and I hope that a Buffy movie could do the same.

It makes me scared though. Buffy definitely jumped the shark. Some fans would argue that it was Season 3 or 5 or 6, but we can all agree, I think, that 7 was a waste of time. The reason that the Serenity movie was awesome, was because Firefly was killed too early. We *needed* more of that story. The reason that S&tC the movie sucked was because the TV show tied up all loose ends (also they had random pooping, which is just not a S&tC thing) While I would love to see what is next for some of the Buffy characters (Willow, Faith, Giles, even Spike), I'm not all that interested in seeing more of the Slayer herself.
@ Glyssix: The second thought that came from the same conversation on Movie Blog and Moviehole was that if a new Buffy movie did well, Spike and/or Faith may get their TV spin-offs that were being tossed around as as ideas when Buffy was ending.
Depends on how Whedon's Dollhouse does, prolly...since that features Faith. Leaving the world open for a Spike show. ::drool:: As long as he has no magic chip in his brain that makes him good.
